- Description
- Mandarin Chinese is one of the priority Asian languages listed in the Australian language policies. In Australia, universities offer teacher education programs that prepare for teachers of Chinese as a second language. In traditional curricula for language teacher education, a knowledge-based framework usually contains four key elements for teachers to attain: study of languages, second language acquisition and learning, social-cultural context of language learning, and language teaching. These four elements are based on the fundamental concepts of language teaching by Stern (1983). In the globalized higher educational institutes, such a knowledge-based curriculum is out of date and needs deconstruction and reconsideration. On the basis of reflection upon the evolution of the training models, this paper attempts to discuss how existing programs of second language teacher education should be innovated and implemented in Australia. Deconstructions of the curriculum for language teacher preparation are analyzed from social-cultural, educational, technological and institutional domains. Language learning and teaching are dynamic, diverse and context-dependent processes. Teacher educators need to innovate training programs to align with stakeholders and prepare students for careers in a rapidly changing, highly comparative global workforce.
